As a DTLA dweller, I was beyond excited to have The Broad museum open up right in my neighborhood. Naturally, it was destined to become the first place I take my out-of-town friends who visit. And when my bestie, Bianca, flew in for Thanksgiving, that's exactly what we wanted to do... too bad it was booked through NEXT YEAR!! I feel naive for not anticipating this, but it's alright because we are persistent art lovers who waited in line for two full hours in the "cold" to see this collection. Well worth it, you guys. The Broad is magnificent.
Cy Twombly was a favorite for the color and the illustrations.
I look lost, but I actually feel right at home next to this bright Ed Ruscha piece.
We took our time exploring The Broad collection and really tried to learn as much as we could about the pieces and artists that resonated with us. Basquiat, for example, was a new one for me. This was my first time encountering his work in person, and I was struck not only by the color and texture, but also by the way jazz played such a heavy role in influencing his work. Definitely something I have to go visit again soon.
Grabbing tacos at Guisado's was the perfect cap to our long morning at The Broad. This is another place I love to bring out-of-town friends. There are plenty of wonderful tacos in LA, but Guisado's has cornered the market on a) the most doughy, satisfying tortillas, and b) meat— from incredible chicken with mole to a pulled pork that will blow your mind (metaphorically and physically... it's really spicy). See below for close-ups of both.
Last but not least— no day in DTLA is complete without stopping into The Last Bookstore. They have such a well rounded collection, I'm never at a loss for good purchases. Actually, it's more like my wallet is at a loss... the only other friend who can relate to this book addiction problem is Bianca, and thus, the issue becomes magnified when we're together amongst a bunch of books for sale.
Welcome to our neighborhood, The Broad! I'm grateful for all the goodies this city has to offer and good friends to share it with.
